Need photos for your website?

Sometimes it’s so tempting to go to Google Images and look for a picture and copy the image, regardless if it’s copyrighted or not.

If you want to avoid this kind of problem, try Yotophoto

Yotophoto is the first internet search engine for finding free-to-use photographs and images.
Now indexing well over a quarter million Creative Commons, Public Domain, GNU FDL, and various other ‘copyleft’ images.

(Website maybe slow due to the “Digg” avalance)

Deaf Community Targeted By Scam, Again

I’ve added a new category in Deaf Resource Center : Deaf Scams

I’m starting with a link to the ABC7 report because it merits a permanent status in the directory.

In the past, I used to run information on Deaf Scams in the past until I got threatened and removed the information.

So this time, let someone else do the reporting and I’ll just plug in the link.

But here’s a basic rule of thumb: If you know of a person promoting different and the latest MLM venture, run the other way. Successful people stick with only ONE MLM, not join and drop and join and drop. It takes TIME and COMMITTMENT to build a business!

I’m not anti-MLM. I’m a rep for Cognigen and I have a link on the home page. But I’ve been with Cognigen for years and it shows because it’s still paying me every month!

Relay Services - caught in the act

On one hand, many hearing people are turning down accepting relay calls because they think it’s telemarketing or a scam.

On the other hand, for those that do accept relay call, be very careful not to say anything you don’t want the deaf caller to hear.

Here’s a tale of a Ford dealership bad-mouthing a deaf customer that called via relay services… and the relay operator heard that and typed the bad mouthing words to the customer.

When a mustachioed ape at a Ford dealership, while talking to a deaf
woman over the phone via a Relay Service, makes an offhand background
comment to his coworkers that he’s “talking to the ideal woman — deaf,
dumb and blonde.” And then the Relay Service worker types that sentence
back verbatim to the customer.

Caught in the act

Irony alert - deaf podcast

Did a Google search on “deaf podcast” and this is what I found:

DeafSpot’s Podcast - nothing there
Deafstation podcast- nothing there

Podcast tagged with deaf -There’s two listings, neither which has to do with deafness.

On the other hand, here’s what was offered:

The DisabilityNation Podcast: Podcast Transcripts fo Deaf/Hard of Hearing
- Just have to ask for a transcript ahead of time. And of course there’s the cost factor.

Being Deaf Part 1 : Time Lost (transcript available) - very recent and does the job right!
Being Deaf part 2:  Deaf and Proud (transcript available) - I was listening and reading the transcript and it was very clear and easy to follow because they spoke neither too fast nor slow.

Kudos to Tecnhocato.com  which offers closed caption podcasts. The latest podcast has a transcript available. Now that’s how to do podcasting the right way!

Of course, if you have a podcast and want to reach (marketing) to the deaf community, here’s one service: CastingWords

I’m curious to know if deaf customers are more likely to buy from one company that offers transcripts of their podcasts vs. the competitiors.

Free Remote backup

If you have an AOL or AIM screename, you are eligible for a free 5 GB Online storage space.

If that’s not enough, I highly recommend Carbonite!
