I’ve added a new category in Deaf Resource Center : Deaf Scams
I’m starting with a link to the ABC7 report because it merits a permanent status in the directory.
In the past, I used to run information on Deaf Scams in the past until I got threatened and removed the information.
So this time, let someone else do the reporting and I’ll just plug in the link.
But here’s a basic rule of thumb: If you know of a person promoting different and the latest MLM venture, run the other way. Successful people stick with only ONE MLM, not join and drop and join and drop. It takes TIME and COMMITTMENT to build a business!
I’m not anti-MLM. I’m a rep for Cognigen and I have a link on the home page. But I’ve been with Cognigen for years and it shows because it’s still paying me every month!

On one hand, many hearing people are turning down accepting relay calls because they think it’s telemarketing or a scam.
On the other hand, for those that do accept relay call, be very careful not to say anything you don’t want the deaf caller to hear.
Here’s a tale of a Ford dealership bad-mouthing a deaf customer that called via relay services… and the relay operator heard that and typed the bad mouthing words to the customer.
When a mustachioed ape at a Ford dealership, while talking to a deaf
woman over the phone via a Relay Service, makes an offhand background
comment to his coworkers that he’s “talking to the ideal woman — deaf,
dumb and blonde.” And then the Relay Service worker types that sentence
back verbatim to the customer.
Caught in the act

Do you do eBay auctions? One method to increase your odd of sucess of bidding a lower price is to use a sniping services.
Based on a deaf friend’s recommendation I signed up for this services with a $5 prepaid deposit from PayPal. This $5 went a very long way! There’s no monthly fees and it’s on a sliding scale which means the more expensive the product, the higher the fee when you win. Otherwise it’s 25 cents a snipe. It’s very reliable and works great with eBay.
I recommend AuctionSniper :

I’ve had yet another hard drive crash this summer. Seems that I go through a HDD crash every year.
I do backup to DVDs as well as an external hard drive. Still I lose files between backups and crashes. And I waste valuable time restoring files.
Intially, I have always looked into remote backup but it was too expensive, either by monthly charge or per GB.
How often do you back up your PC? Probably not often enough and it only takes one disaster, and then it’s bye bye PC! Try putting a price on lost time fixing or restoring the files, or transfering files to a new Hard Drive.
Finally there’s a service that’s cheap, unlimited storage space and “idiot-proof”!
First, I do my research using google and blogs. Most said “thumbs up”!
Secondly, I took advantage of their 14 days trial period to try it out. It had no problem backing up 30GB from my PC!
Verdict? One day before expiration, I whipped out my credit card and purchase an annual subscription.
Do yourself a favor. Get Carbonite and backup your PC NOW. You’ll be glad you did that.
